Things I don’t do

29th Jan ' 20

My wonderful and wise friend Amanda recently shared an article written by a fellow mother listing what she doesn’t do. I felt so inspired by that. I am a new mama, with just one little one, and I am sure my views and perspectives will change with the years, but one thing I am surely passionate about is not doing it all.

I’ve received comments before about how I make “fancy” food for Priscilla. We all have things we care deeply about. Each family is different. I believe one of the reasons why so many moms are exhausted and insecure is because they think they need to do it all. While I love to do many things, I can because I choose to not do other things:

  1. I don’t over schedule at all. We stay home often. I don’t do tons of activities, in fact we only attend two: Bible Study weekly and then MOPs every other week.
  2. We don’t eat out much or order food in. I miss those days, those were good times. We don’t live by many delivery places. We instead cook quite a bit. Because I am home so much, cooking and baking is something we have time for. Cilla loves to help in the kitchen.
  3. I don’t stay up to date on celebrities, movies, or shows. I don’t even remember the last time I went to the movies.
  4. I only check my email once a day. I used to be more responsive, but it doesn’t work to try and keep an eye on a busy toddler and take the time to respond well to emails.
  5. We don’t stay up late. We like our early bedtimes all around. I used to stay up and work late into the night. I loved that time. It will come around again.
  6. I don’t have the Facebook app on my phone. It just isn’t something I have the time and space for.
  7. I am not a cruise director with tons of activities planned for Cilla. I want her to learn how to play independently.
  8. I rarely go shopping.
  9. I have never read a parenting book. I rely on the women in my family and friends for parenting advice. We’ve been mothering a long time people, we don’t need google for this.
  10. I don’t worry much. About what others think, our family’s different or quirky choices, or what’s happening in the world. I spent so much of my 20s worried; I just don’t do that anymore. While I stay up to date as best I can, I don’t have the time I used to to dive into the news.
  11. I don’t do my Bible Study homework all the time. I just don’t. I do try and show up. To me, that is the most important part.
  12. While I love it, I don’t read much. I love listening to books on Audible. I do read lots and lots of articles.
